Zcash Coinholders Set to Vote on NU7 Network Upgrade Decisions
Zcash is gearing up for a significant governance event as coinholders prepare to vote on the scope of the upcoming NU7 network upgrade. The vote, which will take place from August 25 to September 12, aims to determine several protocol-level decisions that could shape the future development of the network.
The update in question is notable for its potential impact on Zcash's sustainability and overall performance. One key decision up for a vote is whether to replace traditional halvings with a smoother issuance curve under the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM). Additionally, coinholders will decide when transaction fee reissuance should begin, whether the legacy Sprout transaction format should be deprecated, and how aggressively the NU7 release schedule should proceed if certain features are not completed before the proposed deadline.
The vote is being coordinated by Valar Group and Project Tachyon using a newly developed Tokenholder Voting Chain. This system ensures that funds remain secure and allows shielded wallet users to participate without revealing their identities. To be eligible, users must hold spendable shielded ZEC in Ironwood at the blockchain snapshot scheduled for August 24 at 19:00 UTC.
The 1 million ZEC participation threshold is particularly notable from a governance perspective. With Zcash's circulating supply remaining well below Bitcoin's, securing that level of participation would represent substantial engagement from long-term holders and could provide stronger legitimacy for future protocol decisions.
