Zcash, Monero Rally as Institutional Investors Flock to Privacy Coins
Privacy-focused digital assets surged in August, outperforming the broader cryptocurrency market. Zcash (ZEC) led the pack, gaining 82% and pushing its market capitalization to over $14 billion. The coin's sharp surge was fueled by Grayscale launching a spot ZEC exchange-traded fund near the end of the month.
The ETF gives investors direct exposure to ZEC through a publicly traded vehicle, eliminating the need for managing wallets and private keys. This institutional endorsement helped lift ZEC's market cap from approximately $8 billion at the start of August to its current level. Monero (XMR), on the other hand, started the month slowly but saw daily gains build as August drew to a close.
According to market data, XMR gained nearly 20% in the last week of August alone, bringing its total monthly gain to approximately 40%. The coin's market cap pushed toward $10 billion. Smaller-cap protocols like DASH (up 38.3%), RAIL (up 37.6%), and ZANO (up 26.7%) also saw gains in the category.
