Zcash Price Surges 20%, Wipes Out $34 Million in Short Positions
The price of Zcash (ZEC) surged by approximately 20% on Friday, briefly reaching $1023 per coin and exceeding the $1000 mark. This sudden increase in value caused significant losses for traders who had bet against a decline in the ZEC's price.
The price of ZEC has been rising steadily over the past few weeks, driven by institutional interest and technological advancements. In August, Grayscale began trading its Zcash trust on the New York Stock Exchange Arca (NYSE Arca), making it more accessible to a broader range of investors.
A recent development in technology also contributed to the price increase. The Zakura team released new cryptographic tools that reduced the time it takes to create private transactions on mobile phones from over 3 seconds to under 200 milliseconds, aiming to make Zcash faster and more practical for everyday use.
The surge in demand was so significant that over $34 million worth of short positions had to be liquidated. This can lead to further price increases as those who were betting against the ZEC's value are forced to buy back into the market, creating a self-reinforcing cycle.
