Zcash Surges Past $1,000 as Short Sellers Suffer Heavy Losses
Zcash has made its first appearance above $1,000 in nearly a decade, and it's not just a small blip on the radar. The token has gained 120% in the past month alone, trading near $1,124, according to BeInCrypto Markets.
This triple-digit rally has put pressure on short sellers, who are now watching their positions sink deeper into the red. A trio of whales, including Garrett Jin, have significant unrealized losses from their ZEC short positions. Jin's trade is down $21.94 million, while another wallet is sitting on a paper loss of $13.33 million.
The rally has been costly for traders positioned against ZEC, with none of the three whales folding yet. Funding rates have softened the blow somewhat, but the losses are still substantial. Jin has collected $554,850 since opening his trade, due to positive funding rates that favor long positions over short ones.
The Zcash price surge is part of a broader trend in the privacy coin sector. According to Glassnode, privacy coins have risen 213% over the past year, with ZEC driving most of this expansion. The token now accounts for 62% of the sector's market cap and has increased by 2,496% in 12 months.
