Zcash Surges Past $1,000, Enters Top Ten Largest Cryptocurrencies
Zcash's price has broken through the $1,000 mark for the first time, causing a significant surge in its market value. Over the past week, ZEC gained more than 30%, pushing its market capitalization to over $17 billion and entering the top ten largest cryptocurrencies by market cap.
The rapid price increase has also led to a sharp rise in liquidations of ZEC futures positions, with over $36 million worth of positions being closed in the past 24 hours alone. One trader, Garrett Jin, lost over $18.5 million on a short position against ZEC after the asset's price rose above $1,000.
Ryan Watkins, co-founder of Syncracy Capital crypto investment fund, has weighed in on the matter, calling Zcash a 'meme' and arguing that its technology stack can be transferred to other networks. He also noted that Bitcoin retains a strong advantage due to its status as the first asset and accumulated liquidity.
Zcash is a cryptocurrency focused on transaction privacy, using zero-knowledge proofs to allow users to make transactions without revealing extra data. Its market appeal rests on several factors, including sharp price growth, entry into the top 10 by market cap, the launch of a spot ETF for Zcash in the US, interest in privacy coins, and the argument from supporters about fixed issuance.
