Zilliqa Executes Hard Fork on September 2, Transferring Exchange Balances
Zilliqa, a layer-1 blockchain, is set to execute a hard fork on September 2, 2026. This event will transfer ZIL balances from ten centralised exchanges onto new addresses. The exchange venues involved intend to reopen deposits and withdrawals after migration and integration tests are complete.
The hard fork comes as an administrative measure for exchange balances. It is not a network upgrade or a recovery of stolen funds. A signing flaw in the Zilliqa Ledger app led to 683,130,969.66 ZIL being drained from 6,772 accounts between March and July 2026.
The incident accelerated the shift to the newer EVM side of the blockchain, which has been running alongside the old side since a rebuild in 2020. The mainnet will consist solely of the EVM side in future, with the old side being shut down rather than repaired.
