ZKsync Bolsters EraVM Security Ahead of Retirement

ZKsync is taking steps to harden the security of its EraVM execution environment before it retires in six months. The company has outlined a series of measures aimed at protecting chains running on EraVM, which includes raising the execution delay from three hours to 24 hours and implementing an independent second node to confirm each executed batch.

Matter Labs is also working on publishing covered Era protocol code three months after an upgrade ships, instead of immediately, to avoid giving attackers an advantage. The company has also developed a new prover called EraBender that would run alongside Boojum.

EraVM was introduced in 2023 as the first production zkEVM, but its successor, Atlas, runs EVM natively and is where new protocol development will take place. The retirement of EraVM does not apply to chains already running Atlas, and permissioned chains such as GRVT will communicate steps to their users directly.
