ZKsync EraVM Security Hardened Ahead of Six-Month Retirement

ZKsync developer Matter Labs has announced a security-hardening program for its EraVM execution environment, which will be retired within six months. The company cited artificial intelligence-driven exploit risks as the reason for this decision.

The program includes five changes: raising the execution delay from three hours to 24 hours, running an independent second node that confirms each executed batch, publishing covered Era protocol code three months after an upgrade ships, developing EraBender, a new prover that will run alongside Boojum, and requiring smart-contract holders in DeFi, DEX, and other crypto ecosystems to follow forthcoming remediation steps.

Funds held in ordinary externally owned accounts require no action, while assets in smart contracts will need steps and dates that will be published in the coming weeks. The retirement of EraVM does not apply to chains already running Atlas, and permissioned chains such as GRVT will communicate steps to their users directly.
