Zondacrypto Scandal Widens as Fifth Suspect Faces Charges
The Zondacrypto scandal has taken another turn as Roman Ż. becomes the fifth suspect to be formally charged by Polish prosecutors. The charges include large-scale financial fraud and alleged money laundering schemes, with prosecutors seeking pre-trial detention for the defendant. According to reports, Ż. maintained his innocence during initial questioning.
The exchange's collapse in April 2026 left over one million registered accounts frozen, with clients reporting losses exceeding $94 million. The case registry has logged more than 3,600 formal complaints from affected users. Forensic experts discovered that the firm could not access a cold storage wallet safeguarding roughly 4,500 units of Bitcoin.
The investigation extends beyond the exchange's financial operations, incorporating an active missing-person inquiry into the whereabouts of Sylwester Suszek, who vanished in March 2022 after attending a business meeting in Czeladź. The president of the Polish Olympic Committee, Radosław Piesiewicz, was previously indicted for allegedly receiving payments in exchange for protection and favoring specific creditors as the firm faced imminent collapse.
The civil front has also seen developments, with the Harju County Court in Estonia admitting a formal bankruptcy petition tied to the corporate entities operating the exchange. A hearing is scheduled to decide whether to declare formal bankruptcy, granting creditors a statutory two-month window to file their capital recovery claims.
