$100 Oil Price Sends Dollar Reeling as Yen Surges
The Japanese yen has strengthened significantly against the US dollar in recent days, driven by expectations of faster Bank of Japan policy tightening and repatriation flows from Japanese investors.
This move has put pressure on the US currency, which is now trading near a seven-month low against the yen. The dollar was down 0.23% at 153.65 yen, not far from Tuesday's low of 152.89.
The escalation of conflict in the Middle East, particularly with oil prices settling above $100 a barrel, has also contributed to the dollar's decline. Brent crude futures rose 3.36% to settle at $101.21 a barrel, weighing on global markets and supporting the yen's gains.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's remarks have added to the yen's momentum, as he dared traders to bet against it following historic joint US/Japanese intervention in July.
