$20 Bill Features King Charles III as First Monarch to Appear on Canadian Currency
The Bank of Canada has unveiled its new $20 bill featuring King Charles III. This is the first Canadian bank note to feature Charles, who replaces his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on the currency.
The new vertical $20 bill will enter circulation in late February 2027 and features a portrait of King Charles surrounded by a floral and leafy tapestry inspired by his dedication to the environment. The bill also includes provincial and territorial floral emblems representing the 13 provinces and territories, as well as a circular window featuring plants that are culturally significant to Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
The new note has several security features, including a purple security stripe with elements that 'spin, transform and pulse' when moved. This makes it easy to check and hard to counterfeit.
