$20 Bill Featuring King Charles Set for 2027 Circulation
The Bank of Canada has unveiled its new $20 bill featuring King Charles. This is the first Canadian paper currency to feature Charles, replacing Queen Elizabeth II.
The new vertical bill was unveiled by Governor Tiff Macklem and will enter circulation in late February 2027.
Macklem described the unveiling as 'historic', noting it's been over 70 years since a new monarch appeared on a Canadian bank note. The late Queen Elizabeth II first appeared on the Bank's inaugural $20 note in 1935, while King George was featured on most bills from 1937.
The new bill features security technologies never before used on a Canadian bank note, including a purple security stripe that 'spins, transforms and pulses' when moved. It also includes provincial and territorial floral emblems representing the 13 provinces and territories.
