$20 Bill Gets Royal Makeover with King Charles III
Canada's $20 bill has undergone a significant change, featuring a new monarch on its design. King Charles III is now the face of the country's most widely circulated banknote, replacing his mother Queen Elizabeth II who passed away in September 2022 after a 70-year reign.
The Bank of Canada unveiled the new design, which will enter general circulation in February. The vertical orientation of the $20 bill is a notable change, following the example set by the $10 note featuring Viola Desmond. According to Governor Tiff Macklem, the new design combines 'striking, symbolic, and secure' elements with images reflecting Canada's beauty and history.
The use of actual cash has been declining in favor of electronic payments, but Canadians still pay attention to their money. The $20 bill is a staple at ATM machines and features King Charles on the front, surrounded by a tapestry of flowers and leaves in recognition of his environmental dedication. The note also includes security features to prevent counterfeiting.
