£306 Billion: UK Savers Miss Out on £12 Billion in Lost Interest
Savers in the UK are missing out on significant earnings due to their money sitting idle in accounts paying no interest. According to new data from the Bank of England, almost £306 billion is languishing in these low-yielding accounts, resulting in a collective loss of over £12 billion per year.
Personal finance expert Sarah Coles warned savers that they could be leaving their money 'less and less valuable' as inflation erodes its purchasing power. She noted that if this money were shifted into easy-access savings accounts earning 4% interest, savers would be £12 billion better off annually.
Coles emphasized the importance of escaping the current account trap by moving money into savings or investments. While easy-access accounts are suitable for emergency funds, fixed-rate accounts can offer higher returns, albeit with the trade-off of locking away money for a set period.
