Michigan's economy took a significant hit this summer due to Canadian wildfire smoke. According to an Anderson Economic Group report, the state suffered $4 billion in lost earnings statewide.

The impact was particularly felt by the hospitality and tourism industries, which rely heavily on outdoor activities during peak travel season. Jack Trebtoske of the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association noted that many businesses lost revenue due to the smoke's disruption.

State data from 2024 showed just how much was at stake, with 131.2 million visitors spending $30.7 billion on lodging, dining, and attractions. The West Michigan Tourist Association expressed concern about the state's reputation, fearing that peak travel season may become associated with smoky or polluted conditions.
