$40 Trillion Debt Milestone Sparks Concerns Over US Financial Situation
The United States' national debt has surpassed $40 trillion for the first time in history. This milestone marks a significant increase from the beginning of former President Trump's first term, when the debt stood at just under $20 trillion. The current debt level is a stark reminder of the country's financial situation.
According to Eric Swanson, professor of economics at the University of California and former senior economist at the Federal Reserve, long-term interest rates in the US are at multi-decade highs. This is partly due to concerns about inflation and partly due to concerns about the extreme levels of US government borrowing.
With investors wary of the scale of the US's debt and tech firms competing with the government for investors' cash, the bond market is demanding higher returns. As a result, interest payments on government debt are now 15% higher than the same period last year, accounting for almost 20% of tax revenue.
Economist Mohamed A. El-Erian warns that investor appetite in lending the US government money through buying bonds is 'diminishing', creating a vicious cycle requiring the government to offer ever-higher returns to keep investors purchasing its debt.
