$40 Trillion Debt Pile Sparks Fears of 'Death Spiral' for US Dollar
The US federal budget deficit has reached $1.8 trillion for the fiscal year-to-date, sparking concerns about a potential 'death spiral' in the country's debt pile.
This warning comes from technology investor Chamath Palihapitiya, who stated that if Treasury yields reach 6%, it would signal the beginning of this 'death spiral.'
Palihapitiya was joined by David Friedberg, who added that higher interest rates will make the country's $40 trillion debt problem worse in the next 12 months.
The government has to refinance $10 trillion of debt over the next year and is facing a significant increase in borrowing costs due to persistent inflation.
This has led to concerns about the value of the US dollar, with some market participants interpreting Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's intervention as an effort to contain borrowing costs.
Rising fears that the US debt pile will become unmanageable are driving bets that the Bitcoin price and gold will climb. BlackRock's head of crypto, Robert Mitchnick, has noted that when concerns about debt levels return to the headlines, it tends to benefit assets like Bitcoin and gold.
