Households in America's 65-74 age group have reached their peak median net worth of $410,000, according to the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances. This is the highest median net worth among any age group in the US.

The majority of households at this stage own a home, with 76% reporting homeownership and a median value of $320,000. Retirement accounts also play a significant role, with 51% having some savings, boasting a median balance of $200,000.

Despite reaching their peak net worth, many households in this age group still carry debt, with 65% reporting some level of debt and 34% holding credit card balances. However, mortgage or home-equity loan debt is relatively low, affecting only 29% of households.

The findings highlight the importance of revisiting one's net worth periodically to understand how quickly assets are being spent and how much flexibility remains in retirement. Net worth alone does not determine retirement security, as a significant portion of wealth is tied up in assets that aren't easily converted into income, such as home equity.
