$78,730: Americans' Alarming Median Retirement Savings at Age 50
Americans approaching retirement age have alarmingly low median savings balances, according to recent data from Fidelity and Vanguard. The figures show that workers aged 45 to 54 have a median 401(k) balance of just $78,730, despite average balances ranging from $163,000 to $216,000.
The disparity between the median and average balances is due in part to the influence of a small number of high-balance accounts. Vanguard reported that half of its participants aged 45 to 54 had less than $78,730 saved in their workplace retirement plans, while half had more.
The same pattern holds true for younger workers. Fidelity's data showed that under-35 savers held a median of $18,880 in total retirement assets. The Federal Reserve's survey found that Americans under 35 had average total retirement savings of $49,130, with a median of $18,880.
The wide gap between expectations and reality is underscored by a Northwestern Mutual survey finding that the average American believes they will need $1.46 million to retire comfortably. Financial planners often advise focusing on median figures and personal savings rates rather than comparing against headline averages.
