$7.9 Billion Aussie Export: Bluey's Economic Impact Revealed
A new government-backed study in Australia has revealed that the cartoon series Bluey is worth $7.9 billion to the country's economy, making it a flagship name behind a screen and games sector valued at over $11 billion.
The report, part of Screen Australia's research project called Screen Currency, surveyed over 13,750 people, conducted six separate surveys, and consulted with 40 industry stakeholders across 18 research partnerships to determine the value of the screen and games industries in Australia.
According to Screen Australia CEO Deirdre Brennan, Bluey has been a key contributor to the sector's growth, saying 'it's a huge opportunity' for the country's screen industry. The report also found that only 36% of Australians say local content is easy to find, despite 84% saying having access to it matters and 75% wanting to watch more of it.
The same report highlighted the need for greater discoverability and promotion of Australian content, with Screen Producers Australia CEO Matthew Deaner stating that 'making Australian content available somewhere within a streaming catalogue is not the same as making it visible to Australian audiences.'
