ADB Issues ¥20 Billion Yen-Denominated Water Bond for Climate-Resilient Projects
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has issued its first yen-denominated water bond, worth ¥20 billion ($126 million), in a move that connects Japan's institutional capital with climate-resilient projects across Asia and the Pacific.
The seven-year bond was purchased by Zenkyoren, Japan's National Mutual Insurance Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives, and arranged by Daiwa Capital Markets Europe Limited. This transaction establishes a direct link between Japanese savings and water management, sustainable agriculture, and food-security projects in the region.
Japan's financial market may see this issuance as a precedent for future thematic debt issues, particularly if ADB provides credible reporting and demonstrates measurable results. The bond reinforces Japan's role in regional development, following the establishment of the Water Initiative for Security, Efficiency, and Resilience Fund by ADB and the Japanese government.
