Advanced AI Models Risk Global Market Shock: Bank of England Warning
The Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, has issued a warning about the potential risks associated with advanced artificial intelligence models. In a letter to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey highlighted the growing capabilities of frontier AI models, which are demonstrating increasingly sophisticated autonomy, problem-solving capabilities, and potential threat capabilities.
Bailey identified cybersecurity as the most pressing concern for the global financial system, citing the impact of advanced AI on cyber threats. He warned that these models could significantly change the speed, scale, and economics of cyber threats, potentially undermining confidence across financial markets.
The BOE Governor also raised concerns about regulatory preparedness, noting that many jurisdictions lack adequate protocols to oversee the development, release, and deployment of advanced AI models. Bailey called on financial institutions and technology providers to strengthen their vulnerability management, response, and recovery capabilities.
