AI Adoption in US Workforce: No Layoffs Yet, But Skills Gap Widens
The Federal Reserve's July Beige Book has shed light on the impact of AI on the US workforce. According to the report, firms are investing heavily in AI technologies to boost productivity and efficiency, but this investment is not yet leading to significant layoffs. In fact, employment levels have remained largely unchanged, with some districts even seeing little to no change.
One notable example is San Francisco, where employment levels were largely unchanged, and there were fewer announced or planned layoffs than in previous reporting periods. Firms in the district are continuing to invest in AI technologies, seeking to drive productivity improvements.
The Beige Book's findings are echoed by JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, who stated on his company's second-quarter earnings call that while they have reduced jobs in certain areas by up to 40%, most of those people were offered jobs elsewhere. This suggests that AI adoption is leading to a shift in the types of tasks and roles available, rather than a net reduction in employment.
However, not everyone is convinced that this is a positive trend. The report notes that skilled workers are still difficult to find in various fields, including technicians and tradespeople, with some wage increases attributed to competition for these roles. This could potentially lead to increased income inequality if AI adoption continues to displace certain types of jobs.
