Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has issued a warning about the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) to the global financial system. In a letter to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey emphasized that AI could accelerate cyberattacks by allowing attackers to quickly identify vulnerabilities in financial institutions and critical systems.

Bailey noted that regulators and financial institutions may face significant operational and resilience challenges if their testing, patching, and recovery processes fail to keep pace with the rapid development of advanced AI models. He called for safe and responsible AI model releases to be supported on a global basis.

The Bank of England chief also highlighted the growing dependence of the financial sector on a relatively small number of powerful technology providers, which he warned could pose risks beyond individual institutions and potentially undermine confidence across financial markets if a major technology provider experiences a disruption or cyberattack.
