AI Job Destruction, Inflation Frameworks Focus of Jackson Hole Symposium
The US job market is showing signs of disruption from rapid AI adoption, according to Morgan Stanley's 'AI Disruption Tracker'. The tracker uses data on AI exposure, employment surveys, and jobs data to gauge the impact. Its findings suggest that unemployment in occupations with high AI exposure is rising, while jobless rates in low- and medium-exposure occupations have stabilized.
Although the impact is small, it's increasingly visible. In the first half of this year, unemployment continued to rise in highly exposed occupations, with a 0.5 percentage point increase above what aggregate labor-market conditions would normally predict.
The Federal Reserve's symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, will be closely watched for clues on new Chair Kevin Warsh's task forces on Fed reform. These five study groups will examine the central bank's communications, balance sheet policy, data analysis, productivity, and inflation frameworks.
Former Bank for International Settlements (BIS) chief economist William White is joining the inflation frameworks task force. He was a vocal critic of former Fed Chair Alan Greenspan's view that central banks could do nothing about asset bubbles. White will bring his expertise on broader monetary stability to the table.
