AI Risks Threaten Global Financial Stability, Bank of England Governor Warns
Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England, has warned that advanced artificial intelligence poses significant risks to financial infrastructure. In a letter to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey highlighted fragilities in financial markets, including stretched asset valuations in the AI market.
The role of debt in circular investment deals between AI companies and hyperscalers is also a concern. Bailey noted that large language models could potentially launch cyberattacks, compromising multiple institutions at once.
The interconnectedness of global financial systems makes them vulnerable to breaches. A single breach at a key provider could compromise numerous institutions, making it essential for banks to prepare for disruptions affecting multiple entities simultaneously.
Bailey emphasized the need for faster patch rollouts by banks in response to software vulnerabilities identified by AI models. While frontier AI offers opportunities to strengthen cyber defense, advances in capability must be matched by resilience and preparedness.
