AI Stocks Surge as Inflation Rates Slow
Wall Street is nearing a record high after AI stocks reported stronger-than-expected growth in the spring. Shares of Super Micro Computer jumped 13.3% and CoreWeave leaped 17.9% after beating analysts' earnings forecasts. Nvidia, which supplies AI chips to CoreWeave customers, rose 2.9%. The S&P 500 added 0.2%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up by less than 0.1%.
The improved performance of AI stocks has given Wall Street a boost as investors look for evidence that these high-growth companies can continue to deliver profits despite concerns about their valuations. The sector had come under pressure earlier this year, with some analysts warning that the rapid growth of AI stocks was unsustainable and would eventually lead to a correction.
However, Wednesday's earnings reports from CoreWeave and Super Micro Computer suggest that these companies are still on track to deliver strong profits in the coming quarters. The improved performance of AI stocks has also been driven by easing yields in the bond market, which have fallen following the release of inflation data showing that prices for gasoline, groceries, and other living costs rose 3.4% over the past year.
The deceleration in inflation rates could give the Federal Reserve more leeway to hold off on interest rate hikes, which would help keep a lid on inflation but also make borrowing more expensive for households and companies. As a result, traders are now betting on just a 38% chance of an interest rate hike at the Fed's next meeting in September.
