Airlines Elevate Premium Economy with Sleep Pods and Electric Privacy Screens
For travelers who want to splurge on in-flight experiences rather than just booking a cheap flight, premium economy is an attractive option. And now, airlines are taking this middle-ground class up a notch with new features like privacy screens and sleep pods.
Emirates recently introduced the 'world's first electric premium economy seat with full-height privacy screen' on its Airbus A350 aircraft. The divider can be raised or lowered using the seat controls, and passengers can also adjust their seating position with ease. Additionally, Emirates is introducing wireless charging facilities in its premium economy cabins.
American Airlines has also upgraded its premium economy seats on Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, featuring 44 seats with sculpted headrests, adjustable calf and foot rests, wireless charging, and both USB-C and AC power outlets. Meanwhile, Lufthansa's 'Future Onboard Experiences' initiative includes revamped dining options and cozy slippers for premium economy passengers.
TAP Air Portugal launched its premium economy offering, branded as 'Economy Prime', on select fleets in June. This class offers a choice of two hot dishes, followed by a snack served before reaching the destination, as well as an amenities kit and 13-inch HD screens with film and series selection. On the ground, passengers benefit from premium check-in, fast track, priority baggage, and extra leg room.
Lastly, Air New Zealand is set to debut 'Skynest' sleep pods on its ultra long-haul flights between New York and Auckland in December. These pods come with a privacy curtain, ambient lighting, USB charging outlets, and personal stowage, allowing passengers to book a four-hour session for NZ$495 (€250.45).
