Airlines Introduce Lie-Flat Economy Seats for Long-Haul Flights

Air New Zealand and United Airlines are introducing new economy seat options that allow passengers to lie flat during long-haul flights.

Air New Zealand's Skynest pods will debut on its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft in November, offering six lie-flat pods in a bunk-style layout between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins. The pods will be available for booking starting May 18, 2026, at a cost of $495 per four-hour session.

The Skynest pods provide a quiet, private space with full-length mattresses, bedding, personal comfort controls, ambient lighting, ventilation, charging ports, and a privacy curtain. Air New Zealand's CEO, Nikhil Ravishankar, said 'New Zealand's unique location means we understand long haul travel better than anyone.'

In contrast, United Airlines' Relax Row seat option will debut in 2027 on Boeing 787 and 777 widebody aircraft. The row of three economy seats transforms into a lie-flat space with individually adjustable leg rests that fold up at a 90-degree angle.
