Airlines 'Premiumize' Economy Class Upgrades
Canada's airlines are upgrading their economy class offerings to make them more comfortable for passengers.
The upgrades include new seating, headrests, USB ports, screens, tray tables, and phone/tablet holders. However, experts say these changes may not necessarily improve the flying experience for economy travelers.
According to John Gradek, an aviation industry specialist and lecturer at McGill University, 'it isn't about restoring pleasure to economy, it's about premiumization.' He believes that these upgrades are more likely to attract premium and loyalty flyers rather than making economy class more enjoyable for all passengers.
The airlines, including Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat, and Porter Airlines, have announced various upgrades in recent months. While these changes may seem substantial, Gradek argues that they are mostly about bringing the basics up to date and do not necessarily address the core issues of economy class comfort.
