Albania Ready for Euro Adoption

Albanians seem largely unconcerned about adopting the Euro as their country's currency. In fact, estimates suggest that around half of all transactions in Albania are already conducted in the European currency.

Besnik Vati, a prominent Albanian entrepreneur and owner of tourism company ATHS, believes it's time for Albania to adopt the euro exclusively, putting an end to its dual-currency system with the lek. 'The dual-currency system in our economy must come to an end,' he said.

Vati notes that Albania is in a different position than some other countries that have recently adopted the Euro. For example, Bulgaria had significant debate before introducing the currency and saw temporary price increases after switching, unlike Albania where citizens are already accustomed to using the euro. He expects Albania's economy to benefit from adopting the Euro.

Economist Eduard Gjokutaj agrees that transitioning to the Euro is feasible but cautions it will be a lengthy process requiring the fulfillment of numerous conditions. 'Joining the eurozone depends on complex mechanisms, but above all on the consistent implementation of laws and regulations,' he said, adding that Albania will need at least ten years to meet the economic criteria for adopting the common European currency.
