Alberta Forms Committee to Address Tariff Impact
The Government of Alberta has formed a new committee to examine the impact of U.S. and Canadian tariffs on the province's economy. The committee, co-chaired by Minister Jason Nixon and Minister Joseph Schow, will focus on understanding the economic effects of these tariffs, particularly on small businesses and their employees.
The move comes after the Government of Canada announced new retaliatory tariffs on August 25 in response to recent U.S. tariffs. The Canadian measures cover $27.6 billion worth of U.S. imports and include tariffs of 15 per cent, 25 per cent, and 50 per cent on various products such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics.
The Alberta committee will also review existing supports to ensure that any future relief reaches the intended parties. Minister Nixon stated that their focus will be on making strategic decisions that protect Alberta families, businesses, and the province's long-term strength.
