Alberta Forms Committee to Assess Tariff Impact
The Government of Alberta has established a new committee to study the impact of tariffs on the province's economy. Co-chaired by Premier Danielle Smith, Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre MLA and Minister of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration Joseph Schow, and Alberta Finance Minister Jason Nixon, the committee aims to understand the effects of both US and Canadian tariffs.
The move comes after Canada announced retaliatory tariffs against the US on August 25, effective September 8. The measures cover $27.6 billion worth of US imports and include tariffs of 15%, 25%, and 50% on items such as steel, dairy products, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics.
Nixon stated that trade uncertainty is a real concern for Albertans, and the committee will focus on understanding the full economic impact of both American tariffs and Canadian counter-tariffs on Alberta. The committee will also examine previous and existing supports to ensure any future relief reaches the people and businesses affected by these tariffs.
