Alberta Forms Committee to Tackle Tariff Impact
The Government of Alberta has formed a new committee to study the economic impact of US and Canadian tariffs on the province's families, businesses, and economy. The committee is co-chaired by Jason Nixon, Alberta Finance Minister and Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration minister, and Joseph Schow.
US tariffs targeting Canada were announced recently, with $27.6 billion worth of imports being affected, including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Canadian counter-tariffs are set to go into effect on September 8, matching US tariffs in terms of percentage.
The new committee will focus on understanding the full economic impact of both American tariffs and Canadian counter-tariffs on Alberta, particularly for small businesses and their employees. They will also examine previous and existing supports to ensure relief reaches those affected by the tariffs.
