Alberta's Hidden Dependency: How Federal Investments Have Shaped the Province's Success
Alberta's prosperity is often attributed to its strong economy and entrepreneurial spirit, but what is less well-known is the significant role that federal investments have played in shaping the province's success.
The Canada Infrastructure Bank has contributed $466 million towards irrigation expansion in Alberta, while the Air Products hydrogen project in Edmonton received $300 million in federal support. These investments have helped attract private capital and reduce risk for industries such as agriculture and energy.
Disaster recovery is another area where federal support has been crucial. In 2016, the Fort McMurray wildfire resulted in significant damage, with federal disaster assistance contributing roughly $300 million towards recovery efforts. Similarly, following Alberta's catastrophic floods in 2013, Ottawa provided more than $500 million in disaster assistance.
Alberta's economy is also closely tied to the rest of Canada through trade corridors and transportation networks. Federal participation has helped finance these infrastructure projects, which have strengthened the province's two largest economic centers.
