Alphabet Enters Australian Dollar Bond Market Amid Tech Debt Frenzy
Alphabet is expanding its global borrowing campaign by issuing bonds denominated in Australian dollars for the first time. The move comes as US tech companies continue to aggressively tap debt markets to fund their artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure ambitions.
The Google parent company has hired banks to arrange the offering, which is part of a broader strategy to raise funds in multiple currencies. In February 2026, Alphabet raised approximately $20 billion through US dollar senior notes, exceeding its initial target of $15 billion due to overwhelming investor demand.
Orders for that single issuance reached $140 billion, indicating investors wanted to lend Alphabet roughly seven times more money than it was asking for. The company has also tapped sterling and Swiss franc markets this year, pushing its total global bond issuance over $30 billion.
The Australian dollar offering marks a new market for Alphabet, with market observers expecting additional entrants from the tech sector may follow suit. This trend is driven by companies seeking to spread their borrowing across various investor bases.
