Alphabet Eyes First AUD Bond as Cross-Currency Basis Aligns

Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, is considering issuing its first-ever AUD-denominated bond. According to recent developments, Alphabet has issued a mandate for 3-year, 5-year, 10-year, and 20-year AUD bonds. This move follows a familiar pattern in the Australian dollar market, where highly rated foreign issuers tap into domestic demand seeking diversification away from their home curves.

The cross-currency basis plays a crucial role in this decision-making process. Issuance becomes attractive when the basis swap back to dollars leaves all-in funding at or inside the issuer's USD curve. Typically, mandates of this kind signal that the basis and domestic spread levels have aligned rather than representing a directional view on AUD.

Notably, the structure of the mandate spans short through ultra-long tenors, including a 20-year tranche. This is significant because duration of that length in AUD is usually absorbed by domestic real-money accounts seeking scarce long-dated high-grade paper. Foreign supply has historically been welcomed at the long end where issuance is thin.

For a debut, pricing tends to come at a modest concession to the issuer's implied curve to clear the book. Secondary performance of the inaugural line will be watched as the reference for any return visits by Alphabet in the Australian dollar market.
