Amazon Expands Global Borrowing Spree with Sterling Bond Debut
Amazon has made its debut in the sterling bond market, marking another milestone in its international borrowing spree. The tech giant plans to sell bonds denominated in British pounds as soon as Wednesday, expanding its rapidly growing borrowing portfolio.
The company's appetite for capital in 2026 has been nothing short of extraordinary, with record-breaking debt issuance across multiple currencies. In March, Amazon raised a staggering €14.5 billion euros through a debut euro bond sale, the largest-ever inaugural issuance in that currency.
Since then, it has tapped Swiss franc markets, raising CHF 2.82 billion spread across six separate tranches, and pulled off a record C$14 billion bond issuance in Canada in June. The sterling deal adds yet another currency to Amazon's total 2026 borrowing, which has already topped $80 billion.
The company plans to use the proceeds from the bond sales for general corporate purposes, including capital projects, repaying existing debt, and investing in AI and cloud services.
