Americans Feel Financially Strained Amid Stagnant Wages and Soaring Living Costs

Despite being home to the world's largest economy, many Americans feel financially strained. According to CNN, 76% of Americans say their biggest economic problem is the rising cost of living. This sentiment is supported by various key economic factors.

The main contributor to financial strain is the imbalance between income growth and living expenses. U.S. Census data reveals that median household income has seen minimal real growth when adjusted for inflation, particularly following the spike in prices after 2020.

In contrast, essential goods and services like housing, food, and transportation have increased in cost, reducing disposable income available to households. Inflation has played a significant role in shaping financial conditions, with data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showing consumer prices rose significantly across major spending categories between 2021 and 2023.

Rising expenses combined with limited income growth have led many consumers to rely on credit. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, total U.S. credit card debt reached approximately $1.28 trillion in 2025, a record high. Additionally, average credit card interest rates have exceeded 20%, increasing the cost of carrying balances and making repayment more difficult for borrowers.

Housing affordability challenges persist, with both home prices and rental costs having increased significantly over the past decade. Rising mortgage rates and home prices have made homeownership less accessible, particularly for first-time buyers. Furthermore, limited emergency savings leave many households vulnerable to financial shocks and increase their reliance on credit during emergencies.

Rising healthcare and education expenses also strain household budgets. Employer-sponsored family health insurance premiums have risen steadily, reaching nearly $27,000 annually in recent data from the Kaiser Family Foundation. Student loan debt remains a significant financial obligation, with approximately 45 million Americans holding student loans totaling around $1.6 trillion.

Food affordability has become a growing concern, with millions of households experiencing food insecurity each year, meaning they lack consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. Rising food prices have contributed to this issue, particularly for lower- and middle-income households.
