The Swiss government has appointed Christoph Ammann as the new president of the Bank Council at the Swiss National Bank (SNB), effective May 1, 2027. He will succeed Barbara Janom Steiner, who has been in the position since 2019 and is stepping down after reaching the maximum term in office.

Ammann, a former member of the Cantonal Government and Head of the Department of Economic Affairs, Energy, and Environment of the Canton of Bern, has been a member of the SNB's Bank Council since 2019. The Bank Council oversees and controls the conduct of business by the SNB, including compliance with legislation, regulations, and directives.

The appointment marks a change in leadership for the SNB's governing body, which does not decide monetary policy but rather focuses on overseeing the central bank's operations.
