Ammann to Lead SNB Bank Council After Janom Steiner's Departure
Christoph Ammann has been appointed as the new President of the Bank Council at the Swiss National Bank (SNB), effective May 1, 2027. He succeeds Barbara Janom Steiner, who is stepping down after reaching the statutory 12-year limit on Bank Council terms.
Janom Steiner has been a member of the Bank Council since 2015 and its President since 2019. She will be replaced by Marc Mächler, who was appointed as Vice President for the remainder of the 2024-2028 term.
Ammann has been a member of the Bank Council since 2019 and served as its Vice President since May 2025. Before joining the SNB, he spent ten years in the Bern Cantonal Government, heading the Department of Economic Affairs, Energy, and Environment.
