Armenia Seeks EAEU Reforms Amid Trade Restrictions with Russia
Armenia's economy minister, Gevorg Papoyan, has spoken out about his recent phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the call, the issue of trade restrictions within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) was discussed.
Papoyan emphasized that products being sold freely in various markets such as the United Arab Emirates, the European Union, and China cannot fail to meet Russia's standards. He attributed the problem to the lack of adherence to EAEU principles rather than a shortage of alternatives.
The minister stated that all EAEU member states are obligated to ensure the free movement of goods, services, and workforce. The presence of artificial obstacles indicates a violation of the union's principles.
Papoyan expressed Armenia's desire for the EAEU to function effectively and not resemble the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). He stressed that non-functioning mechanisms are not only a problem for Armenia but for the entire Union.
