Asia Stocks Rise as US Growth Slows Amid High Inflation Concerns
Asian stocks were generally higher on Monday, following a mixed performance by US shares after a report on the US economy showed weaker-than-expected growth. The Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo rose 0.3% to 68,929.33, while the Hang Seng in Hong Kong gained 1.6% to 25,521.99.
The Shanghai Composite index also increased by 0.8% to 3,960.19. In contrast, the S&P/ASX 200 in Australia fell 0.4% to 9,076.90. The Taiex in Taiwan rose 0.5%, while the Sensex in India dropped 0.5%
The mixed performance by US stocks followed a report on Friday that showed shoppers spent less at US retailers last month. This data could help the Federal Reserve keep interest rates low, which is positive for investors.
However, it also suggests growth may be slowing down when inflation is still high. The Fed has no effective tool to address both stagnating economy and high inflation simultaneously, making 'stagflation' a worst-case scenario.
