Asian Equities Mixed as Traders Await Hawkish Tilt from Warsh
Asian equities were mixed at early trade on Friday August 28 as traders awaited Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's address at Jackson Hole. The markets anticipated a hawkish tilt from Warsh, who would likely weigh inflation against a softening economy.
The Kospi in South Korea led regional losses, sliding 1.04%. MSCI's broader Asia Pacific gauge also eased lower, while Hang Seng futures dropped 0.5%, hinting at a soft start for Hong Kong shares.
However, Japanese equities bucked the trend, with the Nikkei 225 climbing 0.66% and the Topix advancing 1.04%. The Japanese yen held largely steady at 159.33 per dollar, but investors kept an eye on Tokyo for signs of currency intervention.
The US Federal Reserve's remarks were under scrutiny as traders sought clarity on how to balance inflation with a softening economy. US Treasuries extended their decline for a second straight session, with yields rising two to three basis points across maturities amid mounting worries over inflation and America's fiscal trajectory.
