Asian nations are pushing back against the US 'forced labor tariffs' imposed by the Trump administration, calling them unjust and groundless. The 10% to 12.5% tariffs were finalized on 60 countries, targeting goods produced with forced labor.

Australian Minister for Trade and Tourism Don Farrell stated that the tariffs are inconsistent with the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Australia and the US, and should be scrapped. He was joined by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles, who called the tariff decision 'truly nonsensical.'

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed extreme disappointment, pointing out that the US investigation failed to provide meaningful evidence to support claims of forced labor. New Zealand Minister for Trade and Investment Todd McClay also criticized the claim that forced-labor-produced goods have a material impact on New Zealand's economy as 'completely unbelievable.'

Singaporean Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan criticized the move, stating that it lacks economic justification. He pointed out that Singapore runs a trade surplus with the US, and there is no technical or economic basis to impose tariffs.

The private sector has also spoken out against the tariffs, with George Barcelon, president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, warning that they will undermine industrial competitiveness.
