Asian Shares Mixed After US-Japan Currency Intervention
Asian shares were mixed on Tuesday after a rally on Wall Street that was helped by easing oil prices. Regional investors are still weighing the impact of last week's joint U.S.-Japan currency intervention.
The Nikkei 225 in Japan gained 0.3% to finish at 63,957.53 as the U.S. dollar rose against the yen. Analysts say the intervention's effectiveness remains uncertain because it doesn't address fundamental economic reasons behind the currency fluctuations, including inflation, interest rates, and relative strengths of economies.
Some analysts believe that a joint operation carries more signaling weight than Tokyo acting alone, and the pledge of further action will give speculators pause. However, any U.S. contribution will probably be constrained by size, according to BMI, a unit of Fitch Solutions.
