The Asian stock market experienced a 1% rise, while the Japanese yen surged by 2.6%, following Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller's comments on easing U.S. inflation.

In an interview on September 3, Waller emphasized that his decision for the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee meeting on September 15-16 would depend heavily on the August inflation data.

Waller noted that three-month core inflation had fallen significantly from 4.76% in February to 3.05% through July, but cautioned that a hotter-than-expected August reading could still trigger a rate increase.

The dovish pivot from Waller rippled across Asian markets, lifting the MSCI Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan by 1.0%. The yen's strength was underpinned by a weakening U.S. dollar and mounting expectations that the Bank of Japan could raise its own interest rates at its September 17-18 meeting.

The Japanese Nikkei 225 posted a 0.8% gain despite the pressure of a stronger currency on its export sector, while South Korean markets joined the regional upswing with the Kospi rising 1.1% due to a resilient technology sector.
