Asian Stocks Split Amid Rising Oil Prices and JGB Yields
Asian stocks diverged on Wednesday as oil prices ticked higher and bond yields remained elevated. The Nikkei 225 in Japan fell 0.3%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 1.2%.
The divergence was largely due to the differing economic conditions in each country. In Japan, core consumer inflation picked up to 1.8% year-on-year in July, and the composite purchasing managers' index (PMI) rose to 53.4 in August, signaling expansion. However, Japanese government bond yields were near 30-year highs.
The rise in JGB yields is a reminder that Japan's era of ultra-low rates may be coming to an end. This could ripple beyond Tokyo and affect global markets, as Japan is a major source of low-cost yen borrowing and a big buyer of overseas bonds. If Japanese investors slow their foreign bond buying, global bond markets may need slightly higher yields to attract other buyers.
