Asterix Cover Art Smashes Records at Belgian Auction
An original cover illustration for the classic comic album 'Asterix in Britain' has shattered records, selling for a record-breaking 1.4 million Swiss francs at an auction in Liège, Belgium.
The artwork, created by late artist Albert Uderzo using gouache, depicts Asterix, Obelix, and their British cousin Teefax fleeing from rugby players while carrying a barrel.
The sale, which exceeded its pre-sale estimate of 150,000 to 200,000 euros by a factor of seven, reflects the surging global demand for original European comic art.
Uderzo co-created the beloved Gaulish warrior with writer René Goscinny and his original works have become highly sought-after assets in the international art market, prized for their historical and cultural significance as well as their artistic merit.
