The ASX 200 index rose sharply on Thursday, reaching its highest level in five months. It traded 120 points higher at a high of 9139.7, supported by strong gains on Wall Street and resilient data from the Federal Reserve. The tech sector was a standout performer, with Palantir's share price surging after it beat earnings expectations.

The energy sector also saw significant gains, driven by a rise in crude oil prices. Amplitude Energy rose 2.15% to $1.54 and Woodside Energy lifted 1.23% to $32.89. The materials sector was solid across the board, boosted by stronger US manufacturing data.

The ASX 200's gain of 115 points (1.28%) brings it closer to its record high of 9202.9 set in late February. If it can hold above yesterday's low of 8940, a break of this record appears increasingly likely.
